Private University Bilkent is one of the top three ranking Universities in Turkey. It is famous all over turkey. Bilkent owns (or is owned by a man who owns) also numerous industrial branches - including stuff related to defense/military industry. It is rather new University that has risen to fight for the title of 1st University of Turkey with one of its worst competitors ODTU - Orta Doðu Teknik Universitesi (METU - Middle East Technical University) that in fact is the neighbouring university. Bilkent was founded by Ihsan Doðramacý. At the moment Bilkent is thriving well and in the campus area new University buildings are rising.

Bilkent students comprise of three different groups - the ones who get in by paying the annual fee (for 2007-2008 around 12 000 USD), the ones who get a stipend for their talents and the ones who have been in Bilkent private hich school and they get a place straight to Bilkent. This is what I've heard from the students. It seems that many of the students coming in by payments by their parents are more into the Management and economics side and not so much in the Natural sciences side.

In the differences of the backgrounds of these different groups can be seen relations to the things I've heard on Campus. Some of the exchange students tell that they have never seen such laziness ever before as they have seen in Bilkent in the Management and Economics side and that there has been times when the whole family of the student have come to ask for the teacher to let the student pass the course. But there has been also good comments about ambitious ppl in these branches and the reputation of the economics side in Turku University seems to be quite good. On the other hand my experiences from the physics and Computer sciences are mostly of hard working students who don't have time to anything else than studies and for them the quote from Bilkent web site ''Social events and campus activities are as much a part of college life as academics. '' seems to be mostly a joke.
